Get Cooking

Today I was able to accomplish some things that appeared daunting to me earlier in the week.  And what seemed to happen is that auto-pilot took over and just flew me into action.  Really, my thinking was pretty much unnecessary and one thing just led naturally to another.

My new schedule has me going from 8:00 am. to 9:00 pm. each Monday and Tuesday with a few hours of break in the afternoons.  In order to get through these first few days of the week it seemed appropriate to cook several items today that can be available in the fridge to heat up, with a salad or two on the side.  And a pot of soup suggested itself as I was preparing the chicken to cook.  So now the fridge is full of good food, easy to heat and serve and it all tasted great to me.

Funny I never took time on a Sunday to cook so many items before.  Never needed to in the past so small surprise.  But this was fun, and easy and an adventure as my hands just flew into action and created spontaneously – no planning went into it.  That was fun!  Not the drudgery I’d anticipated.  Getting into action always pays off for me.  And this time it was really fun!

Light At The End Of The Tunnel

The past month has been a journey of adjustment and focusing on solutions.  And I’m still in the process.

Little by little, solutions are taking shape.  My books are ordered for school and the bill will be paid by scholarship.  Thank You God.  The decluttering process is still happening – I’ll be picking up the pace starting today or tomorrow for the yard sale and sale of larger items online.  Financial advising solutions are in process and we’re approaching the 1/3 mark on the way to resolution.  The heat wave and humidity high has broken and we’re enjoying perfect sleeping weather.  And I just picked up another client yesterday.  These are all good markers of progress to set us up for success over the next year.

We may have to take in a renter to make ends meet, which is an extreme measure that many homeowners are turning to these days.  I’m investigating exchange student options as well as advertising at a seminary school down the road.  And we can always use the internet to find a renter if need be.  It will mean some additional adjustment, and I’m willing to do it to pay the bills.  It’s not a permanent situation.  Just temporary, until more money comes in and I’m working full time and done with school.  Knowing there’s light at the end of the tunnel fuels my willingness to take extra measures and also preserves my peace of mind.  These are investments in our future.  If all works out, I’ll be done with school at this time next year and working full time in my new career choice.  That is a short-term goal to continue working toward, and I can do it.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am making good progress. ”

I’m Not Alone

I did speak with my sponsor about the aversion to the medical bills.  She shared that she has a similar aversion for other reasons.

This is another opportunity for both of us to see that we are not alone in our cringing about this particular aspect of dealing with a part of life.  When she shared with me what she does, it was comforting to hear that I’m not the only one.  She offered supportive words.

When these examples of how honestly reaching out for help occur, they keep me in a state of being human rather than attempting to be super human or being in denial.  There are always opportunities for growth, and dealing with these bills is certainly one of mine.  Instead of feeling less than, my sponsor’s confirmation of the discomfort she feels helped me avoid judging myself, and then I could see this as a smaller and more manageable situation to address.  It could have magnified into a huge defect in my mind.  But thanks to confirmation from another human being, it’s possible to see that this is just a part of life. So, I will keep making progress and take care of what is before me to do.  I’m grateful for the awareness and the encouragement.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am in good company.”

Reluctance

A meeting I attend seems to have a segment of members who’ve been coming for years, but haven’t yet requested a sponsor, or worked the 12 Steps.  Reluctance might be a fitting description of their situation. It seems little changes in their lives. They’ve learned the lingo of the program and some of them are very adept at spouting it, but they don’t really seem to understand how it works.

A few sponsees have mentioned to me that they can tell the difference between the members who’ve done the work and are walking their talk, and those who’re only talking.  They’re not criticizing, just noticing because they are so grateful that they are moving forward through the 12 Steps and didn’t wait any longer to get started.  One of these sponsees was formerly in the reluctant group for years, without a sponsor and afraid of working the Steps. With the help of her Higher Power, willingness, courage and the tools of the 12 Steps, her life has transformed in the last year and a half.

Most of my sponsees are now done working through the Steps with me, and are already sponsoring other members themselves.  Their courage and willingness has been an inspiration to me.  And, working with them has shown me the amazing, really wonder-filled way that the 12 Step programs work.  It’s overwhelming at times to witness the process as they move forward in ability to handle what life brings to them.  They show up with more confidence and self esteem each day that we connect.  They are miracles for me to witness daily.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am willing to move forward.”

Step 9

Recently, a sponsee lost a young male relative due to a fluke car accident that could not have been predicted or perhaps prevented.  Fortunately, his wife and unborn child are safe although bereaved.  The entire situation is just so sad for the family.

What the young woman I sponsor was able to glean through this sad loss is her gratitude for having set things right with this relative through her 9th Step amends.  She has been able to share this with other members of the Program, and already she’s touched them with her honesty, authenticity and humility.  We don’t know the future, but we do have today to clean up our side of the street.

Another member mentioned to me that this story has made a big impact on her.  She’s been balking about doing her 9th Step.  She wants control.  And she clings to being right, which is absolutely not what Step 9 is about.  Instead, it is about acknowledging our part and the harm we’ve done, apologizing, doing what we can to make it right and requesting forgiveness, humbly.  The rest is in the hands of our Higher Power.  There are unforeseen benefits, when we are willing.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am willing to be responsible for me.”

Golden Opportunities

A sponsee has been so inspiring in that she is sooooo open to continue learning and growing.

Recently, she returned to school for an executive level class in her realm of expertise.  It’s a relatively new field.  Things haven’t gone quite as she would have liked.  And at the same time, because of that, she now has the opportunity to learn more about areas in which she can make changes and grow.  She will be able to carry these changes from the workplace, out into her personal life as well.

While it has been humbling for her to learn about some gaps in her acumen, she has accepted the evidence with grace and a willingness to grow from the seeming adversity.  There are golden opportunities for her which will impact her in countless positive ways going forward – because she’s open to it.  Some may see this situation as one of those times when it gets worse before it getts better.  And it does get better, and better, when we get out of the way and accept what is before us as an opportunity.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am open to the possibilities.”

New?

Someone who’s only dabbled in 12 Step programs, never worked the 12 Steps, doesn’t have a sponsor and seems not to have surrendered commented the other day – “You think I’m new to the program or something?”  Well, they appear to be trying to control or blame everything outside themselves.  We kept our opinions to ourselves and moved on to another subject.

They aren’t ready to hear what we would say.  Although they haven’t touched alcohol for nearly a year, they also haven’t been willing to do something different to change.  It hasn’t been easy to be around them now that they have nothing to numb their feelings.  Their problems are usually blamed by them on other people or institutions.  We all just keep praying for them to get a sponsor, let go and work the 12 Steps.  And it’s out of our hands.

So we take care of ourselves, trusting that our Higher Power and the Higher Power of that person will handle the situation.  Not always an easy thing to do, it is simple.  And it keeps us sane and serene – most of the time.  And Alanon is there to help us every day.  Thank You God.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am letting go.”
