Take What You Like

Recently, it’s come to my attention that several people in Alanon have been coming to meetings for years, but either don’t have a sponsor, or haven’t worked through the Steps, or both.  My hope is that this is only a minor, temporary trend in the local Alanon community.  For a few years I attended a Step meeting where about half of the members hadn’t worked the Steps.  For a while I stopped attending because I felt uncomfortable that people didn’t appear to be working “The Program.”

Later, I returned to the meeting and did what we’re told to do in such instances, “…take what you like, and leave the rest.”  The more I focused on what was good about the meeting, the more I got out of it.  Since returning, God has been using me as a sponsor to the people who do want to work the program – which means they’re willing to get a sponsor and working the Steps.  These sponsees will then be available to sponsor other new willing people who come to meetings in the future, which resolves the gap in sponsorship and working the program.

When I let go of the perceived problem and focused on the solution, God surprised me by making me available to be part of the solution at the meeting.  Now sponsorship is up.  People working the Steps is up.  And how the program works is more evident in the experience, strength and hope shared in our meetings.  I love how God works.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am always part of the solution.”

Remember to say the affirmation at least 3 times whenever you remember it, preferably in front of a mirror.

Course In Miracles Lesson – Let me perceive forgiveness as it is.

Practice –  Let me perceive forgiveness as it is.  Should I accuse myself of doing this?  I will not lay this chain upon myself.  No one is crucified alone, and yet no one can enter Heaven by themselves.

What We Focus On

Early in the program, part of my spiritual quest included guided meditations on Wednesday evenings at a church.  One of the things the pastor shared was that …what we focus on grows and multiplies.

The concept of our focus magnifying whatever it is on is also stated in the 4th edition of the Big Book on pages 416 through 421.  Learning about this law of consciousness creates a responsibility and an opportunity for me to be thoughtful about where my mind is dwelling.

When I catch myself in a negative space about any person, place, thing or situation it takes only an instant to recognize the error – awareness – and shift my thoughts to focus on the solution.  The solution can be seeing white light around the issue or people, or praying for those involved or working Step 1,2 and 3, giving it to God.  I feel so much better when I shift my thinking – I only have to make the decision, do it and life does get better.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am thinking more positive thoughts.”

Remember to say the affirmation at least 3 times whenever you remember it, preferably in front of a mirror.

Course In Miracles Lesson – I rest in God.  I am as God created me.

Practice – I rest in God. – on the hour.  I am as God created me. – on the half hour.
