Interconnections

Talking with my sponsor the other day, I found myself marveling at the divinely orchestrated interconnection of the work that happens in the program.  My sponsor mentioned how proud she was of the work that one of my sponsees was doing with the Principles of the Program.

What then came to my mind was that this is how our Higher Power works – through my sponsor’s sponsor, then my sponsor, then me, then to my sponsee, to her sponsee and so on.  The chain of cause and effect is infinite really – and I love the interconnectedness!  We are never alone. The wisdom, experience and courage of so many who’ve gone before us is still paving the way for our success in life.  We have only to reach out for help, and our request is answered through the wisdom chain of our Higher Power. It’s an intricate network of synchronistically placed knowledge and experience from which we receive exactly what we need to hear, or see, or experience.

Another wonder of the programs, the link of communication never fails to fill me with inspiration and teach me more about the Promises on page 83 of the Big Book.  No matter which 12 Step program(s) we’re involved with, these promises never fail – when we are willing.

Sadness and Grief

Our littlest baby bunny was killed by one of the neighborhood cats yesterday.  I took the above picture of the little one last week.  It makes me so sad when I find them attacked out in our yard (there were 2 babies and an adult last year that I took to the Wildlife Rehab Center).  My husband says I have a big heart.  I know that it’s thanks to the 12 Step Programs that my feelings are accessible.

There was a time where my feelings seemed to be on perverbial hold – stuffed and at bay, but never expressed.  Except for anger.  That seemed to be the only acceptable emotion for us to express growing up.  As an adult, my sponsors have taught me that it’s okay to feel.  It’s part of the human experience.  My therapist, a wise woman has also helped me learn to access and appropriately express those feelings.  They have each taught me that anger is usually masking hurt or shame or sadness.  Most of the time, I can go right to those feelings and talk about it or get into some type of helpful action about the feelings.  And sometimes, just feeling the emotion is what’s called for.

I cried about the bunny.  We were friendly.  It trusted me, and would hop over to me when I talked to it.  Only a few weeks old, it’s death reminds me again of the miracle of life and how precious it is.  Okay, so now I’m tearing up again.  And it’s okay.  The bunny’s life served a purpose, enriching our Spring experience this year every time it showed itself.  For that, I am so very grateful.  And it’s presence in my life reminds me also of how easily we can all impact the lives of other creatures on the planet.  My intention is for my presence to make a helpful, positive, enriching impact.  We are all connected – that’s my belief.  Thank You God.

Synchronicity or Higher Power

I think synchronicity and our Higher Power is the same thing.  And it doesn’t really matter to me either way.

As I’ve recounted before, what we focus on grows and multiplies.  My focus is on what’s good, what’s working and what is great/right about each day.  Sure, my focus can take a detour from time to time, but for the most part it is on the positive path.  People say I’m an optimistic person.

Sunday morning at the coffee shop that serves my favorite treat, I briefly responded to the man next to me about something and we got to chatting.   The next thing I new in response to my comment about needing a digital camera for some of my work, he was telling me about one he’d just seen at a garage sale an hour earlier for $2.oo.  He knew it was a good one, since it was just like his – and he pulled his out to show me all the features.  In seconds flat, I was on the cell phone to my husband who was running an errand.  One half hour later we were the happy new owners of this $230.00 camera for $2.00.  Thank You God!  I love how our Higher Power works.  And it also reinforces what I already know about the great power in connecting with our fellows.

Another Gem Of Sponsorship

I’m so grateful for the new learning that sponsorship continues to share with me in unexpected ways.

The great wonder and delight is how beautifully God’s grace works through sponsees to teach both of us about how to live life on life’s terms.  Each time a sponsee approaches me about a situation and how to deal with it in a new, more helpful manner, I have the honor and the obligation to share what I’ve learned that works.  These are opportunities to pass on the years of tradition shared with me through all of my sponsors and other program members – great wisdom.

What’s still amazing to me is the new learning that takes place for me as I hear these words come out of my mouth.  Nearly every time, what I say is reminding me of what I also need to focus on.  Or words I’ve heard and said so many times previously, express somthing in an entirely new way so I can apply it more effectively in my own life.  These are wonders of wisdom that keep passing on the serenity and sanity of the 12 Step way of life to all of us – truly, more “Promises” of the programs.

Being Humbled

Our Higher Power seems to teach us about being humbled.  It’s not always something we appreciate at the time, but it is an important lesson to learn, and keep learning.

When we’re honest and just share what is going on with us, people in the program show up in ways that we would never have expected.  It’s about humility.  My sponsor and her husband are a wonderful example to me and so many others of how that principle works in the 12 Step programs.  On a formal basis, they are very active in the program, speaking at 12 Step functions in the United States and overseas.  Locally, they are active as sponsors, speakers, and by doing service work in a myriad of capacities.  And on a personal level, they continue to inspire me and others by the thoughtful, generous, loving ways that they show up in relationships and in how they extend themselves when they become aware of a need in our community.

I learn from their example to show up when asked, and even when I just happen to perceive another person in need.  They also teach me how to receive when they extend their loving generousity to me, which they have on countless occassions in ways large and small.  It is overwhelming for me at times, and humbles me.  They also inspire me to pass it on.  These are the promises in action.  We learn from humbling opportunities, being honest and following the good examples of others.  Pass it on.

The Promises

Yesterday, all of the trees where we live were covered in the most beautiful twinkling frost!  We were all smiling at the sparkling beauty before us!  We could have ignored it.  In fact, there was a time where I wouldn’t have looked up to see anything but the ground as I lamented the poor condition of my life.  Now I have a choice.

The 12 Step programs help us to lift our heads to see beyond our previously so limited view.  Beyond ourselves, to see others in our world.  We can choose to see the icing on the cake.  It seems a good day to remember the Promises as they are part of the foundation so apparently divinely inspired many years ago that lead us to this new perspective.  At the bottom of page 83 in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Promises read as follows:  If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.  We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.  We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.  We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.  No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.  That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.  We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.  Self seeking will slip away.  Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.  Fear of people and of economic insecurtity will leave us.  We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.  We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves

Now, I wouldn’t miss the view for anything.  Each morning I look out our bedroom window and see the beautiful day just waiting for us.  I’m grateful and feel so blessed.  And it’s not forced – it comes naturally through the blessings of the Promises and my Higher Power.  Miracles daily!

Step 7

SunriseRainbow_76505

Reading through Step 7 in the 12×12 (The Twelve Steps and 12 Traditions) today with a sponsee we had some helpful discussion and revelations.  Now she has “Humbly asked God to remove these shortcomings.”

The Step 7 discussion focused on how we make choices we often regret when we are in fear over losing things that we already have, or not acquiring what we want.  As I reminded my sponsee about the Promises, about how the Big Book says that before we are halfway through we will find a new joy, a new freedom and happiness, she nodded knowingly.  She has already been experiencing the Promises.  She has seen that as her former choices to react to situations shifts to how to respond with more helpful behaviors, the miracles are happening.

And these are seemingly small changes in behavior.  Yet, these small changes have led her to enjoy more time with her husband, try some new activities that she was never open to before – and she so enjoyed herself – and have dimished the stress that she’s experienced during some life transitions.  Little miracles are happening in her life;  calls from new friends to join them for social events, fun with her husband, opportunities for her to make positive contributions to others without interfering with her ability to take care of herself, a new job.  And she wasn’t even halfway through the 12 Steps when these miracles started happening – just like it says in the book.  How usual.  How wonderful.  This is how it works.

Course In Miracles Lesson – I will not use the body’s eyes today.

Practice – In Father, Christ’s vision is Your gift to us, and it has power to translate all that the body’s eyes behold into the sight of a forgiven world.  How glorious and gracious is this world!  Yet how much more will we perceive in it than sight can give.  The world forgiven signifies Your Children acknowledge their Father, lets the Father’s dreams be brought to truth, and waits expectantly the one remaining instant more of time, which ends forever as Your memory returns to them.  And now their will is one with Yours.  Their function now is but Your own, and every thought except Your own is gone.
