New Adventure

My internship started this week and it has been such an honor to be allowed to sit in with people who are seeking help.  I feel overwhelmed and grateful for the glimpse into their lives and the struggles and challenges they’ve faced.  Their strength and fortitude are amazing.

In 12 Step meetings I also hear stories of grace, and courage and amazing strength from other members.  They show me the way with what they share, especially when it’s new territory for me.  And yes there is always some new territory through which we find our footing and grow.  Each new life experience helps me develop my frame of reference for how to live a whole, healthy, happy and balanced life.

It’s part of the process of the adventure to keep learning in life.  That’s why we keep coming back to meetings.  It really does work to continually show us new options, new awarenesses and expand our lifescape.  We are blessed to be able to access such a rich source of knowledge, experience and possibilities through the 12 Step Programs.

Blessings

One of my sponsees got married today.  She called on her way to their small courthouse ceremony in happy tears, moved by the love she feels for her now husband.  She reminded me of all the happy tears I’ve shed for the many blessings and miracles in my life and the love I’ve felt for my husband these past several years.

And the greatest joys of my life have been shared with my husband.  Trials and all, we have celebrated moments of love and laughter, adventure and tenderness that surpass my former imaginings of what a loving relationship could be like.  For the many lovely moments shared with him I am eternally grateful.

And now, I thank Spirit/God in advance for the many moments yet to come for us.  The thought of it moves me to more happy tears and gratitude for blessing us with these precious times of beingness on the planet.  I hope that my sponsee and her new husband in their life together have the same joyful partnership events that I’ve been blessed to share with my husband.

Blizzard – Life

We had our first blizzard of this century and it was a doozy!  It knocked out my internet connection for the past 3 1/2 days and kept me from using my back door until my husband could get home and dig us out.

And despite the challenges presented by so much snow and wind so fast, it was nice to stay inside with my hot chocolate and some good movies on TV.  Very cozy in fact.  I enjoyed the time to myself to just be.  No have to’s, no shoulds, and peace.  Other than the wind and a few hours of TV, we enjoyed peace and quiet for two days with very little traffic on the streets.  Instead, people walked in the streets because the sidewalks were snow drifts.

And the few who ventured out in their cars and got stuck, were happily pushed out by neighbors and other passersby who enjoyed the opportunity to help out.  There’s a nostalgia and comradery that happens in our land when Winter hits.  We are all in it together, like in the 12 Step Programs.  People seem to feel connected by a common bond – SURVIVAL – just like the 12 Steps.  They are both about survival from slightly different stances, but both can be life or death.  When life or death is at issue, the decision to work together is a so much easier choice.  Many of us don’t even have to think about it – it’s automatic.  An automatic choice for life.  I like that.

Choosing Service

Service work is not something we do only in connection to the 12 Step programs.  We can also contribute to the greater community through a myriad of non-profit events and activities for we are each responsible for stewarding our planet with our personal life talents.

Saturday, my husband and I attended training for an event that happens twice a year to help the homeless.  We think the work done by this non-profit is admirable and so worthwhile for our entire community.  Other ways that we serve are less obvious than this event.  Sometimes, service work is as simple as a smile to a stranger on the street – perhaps the only one they receive that day.  It’s good for them to receive it, and might be even be more helpful for them when they return it, which they inevitably tend to do.

When considering the type of service work we participate in, it’s helpful to think about the many categories in which we can all contribute.  Both in the 12 Step Programs – volunteering as a trusted servant or at an event, sponsoring, telling our stories at a treatment center or family program, or in our local or global communities we have many opportunities.  Being thoughtful and deliberate in our choices can lead us to results that are overwhelming in the way they touch others.  I’ve found them to be very moving and heartwarming for me, without exception.  And we’ve committed to participating throughout the year.  It keeps us grateful for our many blessings, and passing it on as the Programs teach us – so we can keep it.

Promises Delivered

I am so blessed!  Today, two women I sponsor called to share all sorts of good news items with me.  It was such a treat to hear about all of their progress, and how the Promises of the Program are manifesting in their lives!

The Promises are showing up for them because they’ve been willing to do the work.  Each of them in their own particular ways have surrendered.  There is power in surrender.  Like me, they too have been layed off in the last two years and we have all been learning to make lemonade out of lemons.  One woman has been in a wonderful new job for nearly a year.  She has approached this new position with a paradigm shift about how to be a part of an organization – instead of trying to be an island.  The results are stunning.  After only 9 or 10 months she has just been promoted!  I love it.  And her family life is better than ever.  Thank You God.  She has really done the work as the Program suggests.

The other woman is starting to spread her wings with the job search and career choices available.  She starts a class next week to help her narrow down her search and open a few new doors for her to consider.  From the angry, defensive young woman I first met, she is continuing to soften and gentle herself and organize her outsides and her insides to align with the person she wants to be – and it’s working.  She’s down to half the clutter of a year ago, and new work opportunities are presenting themselves weekly.  Both of these women are miracles of the 12 Step program and lovely examples of the Promises in action.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am willing to receive the Promises of the Program. ”

Divinely Timed

Last night a sponsee called me late.  She’s never done that before so I knew she was struggling.  What I didn’t know was how her reaching out for help at a time of strife would actually prevent me from making a situation worse.

When she called I was in the process of writing an email to someone regarding a difficulty we were having with our communication about an issue.  My frustration was coming out in the text and my words, though carefully chosen, were not necessarily going to be helpful.  Her call was divinely timed and as I shifted to being of service I, too, was put back on track.  Together my sponsee and I focused on page 552 of the AA Big Book, and what to do if we have a resentment.  After that reminder, we focused on pages 416 to 421 of the 4th edition (it’s 448-452 in the 3rd edition) on Acceptance.  These two passages on resentments and acceptance are what kept me on track daily in my first few years in the programs.  And they still work when I use them.

My opportunity last night was to let this newcomer know that she really helped me by reaching out for help at exactly that moment.  And I assured her that down the road, when she is sponsoring another newcomer, she’ll remember last night as a turning point where she started to learn how the program really works.  She’ll be able to pass on to that newcomer how reaching out for help actually helped their sponsor, just like she helped me last night.  Halfway through the call we were laughing and she sounded so much better.  She’s refocused on Steps 1, 2 and 3 as well and remembering to say the Serenity Prayer.  So am I.  These divinely inspired tools and the timing our Higher Power engineers are stable solutions that ensure sanity and serenity.  They work.

Sharing

We have a house guest for the next three months.  I’m not used to this and the introduction phase could be going better.  It’s okay.  Nothing too out of the ordinary when new people are learning how to live together.

So I’m learning more about patience, communication, adjusting to change, what works and what doesn’t and how to learn these things as graciously as possible.  This will be an adventure for me.  And it’s important for me to breath through it all, deeply and slowly.  Yoga is a yearning for me presently.  It’s calling my name for peace, for serenity, and for grounding and sanity.  Eating enough, walking more and making adjustments for my vulnerability at this time is a good thing to do.

Meanwhile, two days down and 89 to go.  I can do it.  It’s only temporary, and there are opportunities here for me to grow.  In fact I’m looking forward to it in some ways, for the positive effect it will have on me and the thoughtfulness and tolerance it will further develop in me.  I can do it – a day at a time.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am learning more about how to share. ”
