Legacy

I don’t have any birth children.  I do however have a lovely little step son whom I love and hope to pass on at least some of the kindness and wisdom that’s been shared with me.

It’s crossed my mind that the legacy which most of us hope to leave through our children is something that can happen in many other ways as well.  One of those for me is through this blog.  My goal is to share what I learn that is so helpful to me.  By doing that, my legacy is passed on to anyone who finds some value in the wisdom that’s been passed on to me by so many hundreds of generous people in meetings over the years.  It’s not really my legacy though.  Most of what I write isn’t original, although how I share it may be.  What I share is the legacy of many other people through many generations.  It’s my pleasure and honor to pass it on.  By doing so, my serenity and sanity stay intact.  And of course, my sponsor, meetings and service work are my mainstays.

So, a part of my legacy will be whatever good is passed on by my actions and my words.  Each of us can pay more attention to the daily legacies we pass on to others through our actions and how we speak to people.  When we become more conscious of our options, we can pause and be aware of the choices we make and how they will affect other people and our environment.  Something as simple as a smile to a stranger or the clerk at the store can touch that person, and in turn everyone they connect with that day.  Our seemingly small decisions really can make big differences on the planet.  I’m learning to be more aware of my little decisions each day.  It takes being in the moment, slowly, patiently and with attention to the small opportunities we encounter with our fellow human beings.

Reaching Out

One of my sponsees has been struggling with willingness on some of her 9th Step amends.  In addition to other suggestions, I mentioned that she may want to talk with some other women who’ve recently worked through the Steps and see what helped them.  I’ve been happy to see that she’s following up with other group members.

Many of us approach the 9th Step enthusiastically, and then waffle to and fro with the willingness to go forward with some of these amends.  Sometimes, our humility is lacking and pride is in the way.  Perhaps any previous self righteousness we used as a fortress to feel superior returns for a visit.  It may be that we just aren’t quite sure what will be the best way to approach the amend.  With all of these seeming detours on the 9th Step path, we need only call upon our Higher Power and reach out to others for help.  Our Higher Power will always respond if we are willing to listen and accept the guidance and direction.

So too, will our sponsor and other members of the program share what worked when they were in our shoes.  That’s how it works.  We pass on to others what worked for us.  We can’t keep it if we don’t give it away.  So asking others for help gives them the opportunity to recall what works, which then helps to position it again in their new set of tools for dealing successfully with life.  When we ask for help, we are actually giving these members an opportunity to do God’s work with us.  That is a blessing in my book.

Interconnections

Talking with my sponsor the other day, I found myself marveling at the divinely orchestrated interconnection of the work that happens in the program.  My sponsor mentioned how proud she was of the work that one of my sponsees was doing with the Principles of the Program.

What then came to my mind was that this is how our Higher Power works – through my sponsor’s sponsor, then my sponsor, then me, then to my sponsee, to her sponsee and so on.  The chain of cause and effect is infinite really – and I love the interconnectedness!  We are never alone. The wisdom, experience and courage of so many who’ve gone before us is still paving the way for our success in life.  We have only to reach out for help, and our request is answered through the wisdom chain of our Higher Power. It’s an intricate network of synchronistically placed knowledge and experience from which we receive exactly what we need to hear, or see, or experience.

Another wonder of the programs, the link of communication never fails to fill me with inspiration and teach me more about the Promises on page 83 of the Big Book.  No matter which 12 Step program(s) we’re involved with, these promises never fail – when we are willing.

Thank You

I’ve received the most generous, thoughtful comments from those of you who’ve happened upon this blog.  I appreciate the feedback and the time it takes to drop me a line.  Many of us have such full schedules that adding one new thing to our daily schedule can be a big deal.

It’s thanks to one of you, actually one of my dear, lovely sponsees that this blog started.  She shared about her blog and enthusiastically encouraged me to start writing.  Then she helped me get started and gave me helpful feedback that kept me working to improve.

So to those of you who’ve added me to some of your days, I thank you.  Did you know that you are inspiring me?  Well, you are.  You let me know that I’m doing better at staying out of the way so God can do some good with me.  And the icing on the cake is that I’m following my bliss.  Since college, the first time, I’ve wanted to write.  I just didn’t know what form that could take, or what my voice would be.  Well for the most part my hope is that it isn’t my voice at all, but rather a Higher divine power with Whom I can connect and share.  But here’s the bigger, better thing – we all have that divine connection every day, every minute and we need only reach out and then listen for it.  You all teach me that at every meeting, with every phone call, with each speaker at our conventions – I hear that divine voice and it lifts me out of fear and into love.  So, thank you. – Namaste

Sharing

One of the things my husband and I are learning to do better is sharing – time, things, chores, money, food.  And now, even the gardening.

I’m noticing that we garden together well.  He’s learning what plants not to step on, weed out or accidentally break.  And he seems to be enjoying playing in the greenery.  It’s a different experience to have him out there with me, and it is providing a lovely perk.  We seem to be able to talk about some important, although not necessarily pleasant topics – like finances – quite well when we’re working in the garden.  Difficult subjects don’t end up being such a big deal when we have some lovely peas, radishes or asparagus to distract us a bit in between the tougher topics.

I like that easy way of being together even through the otherwise challenging times we’re facing financially, like so many others these days.  Our bank account may be weaker than usual, but the bounty of our garden and the helpful dialogue it promotes between us are booming.  We have much to be grateful for, and we’re learning to be together in knew ways.  Thank You God.

Black and White

Yesterday, two men – one black, one white – were layed to rest in a Midwestern city.  Each in their own way were larger than life.  Each were also rich in what is truly valuable – the regard of their fellows.  And in their families they also faced the symptoms of addictions with their loved ones.

Both men were very accomplished.  One was a world renowned musician with a legacy that influences people internationally.  As a founder of a particular style of music, he created a tradition which will be carried on by his manypeers, proteges and fans around the world.  The other, built a business dynasty while acting in joint capacity to do service work with our country’s leaders, as well as those of his faith.  In his 70s he earned a masters degree, and joined the Peace Corp to teach those in newly liberated eastern block countries how to be profitable entrepreneurs.  Then in his later days he put his business know how to work for those less fortunate in his hometown.

Each of these men made invaluable contributions to their local community and the world in general.  Both were honored in life as well.  Born only one year apart, they come from the same town, different neighborhoods, but similar values.  They were not inclined to mope about regarding the addictions suffered by their family members.  They did not waste their life energy on empty passing of their days, but were instead active contributors in their own uniquely talented ways.  They touched many lives.  Yesterday, both of their lives were celebrated in funeral services, at the same time, just a few miles apart, in the same town.  My dear friend was blessed to attend the tributes to both of these great, yet human souls.  They weren’t perfect, but they were notable in the way they showed up for others in the world and passed on the gifts God gave them.

The Birds

Oh my goodness.  The birds are just so happy every morning, singing and twittering away at the top of their lungs.  That’s real twittering.

And they are all calling out in their very own voices.  Distinct.  Consistent.  Looking for mates and celebrating the morning.  Happy, happy, happy.  Wouldn’t it be great if every morning, we all – the humans – called out in clear, singing voices to celebrate the day with eachother.  What if we all were true to ourselves, connected to our inner wisdom and the special, talented and very unique creatures that we are and broadcast that to eachother in complementary notes of celebration and praise for the morning.  For the day before us.  For the joy that is life – if we choose for it to be a joy.

That would be some way to start the day.  What a chorus!  Imagine projecting your best to everyone, every day.  It’s a great goal to work toward.  I’m listening to those birds right now and they are truly inspiring when I just take a moment to listen.  Amazing!  And when I make the time to listen well to another human being, they too, are truly amazing!  What we focus on grows and multiplies – so choosing wisely can make the day.  Today I’ll smile at people, even if I don’t know them.  Sounds like a good start.
