Manageable

Three of my seven classes ended this week to a round of applause and great relief from me!  I set myself up for more stress than necessary.  Although it was in the interest of learning more for future resources, the scheduling was too much for me the last three weeks.

It isn’t the first time I’ve set myself up, however, it is the second time in the last six months or so as I push myself to finish a three year degree in two years in order to start earning a living sooner.  Our financial state requires it.  It’s time to start making a lot more money to pay off debt and stay current on the regular monthly bills.  Alanon has taught me over the years to avoid this over doing it type of scheduling, and other than grad school, I’ve learned to say “no” more and schedule less.  So this has been an anomaly, a blip in my self care regimen and now the worst of it is completed.

And in the midst of it all, these last two weekends have included some FUN! for a change.  A night out listening to a friend’s blues band, a night at the opera with my sister, a lovely organic lunch and catching up with my husband’s brother and his wife and kids, and dinner with a friend also to catch up all made the last week more balanced.  Next semester will include dropping two of the five classes I’m currently registered for to keep my sanity sustained.  It’s my last semester and includes practicum and writing my dissertation.  It will be busy, but more manageable.  And with the coming of Spring in our tundra land, the days are brighter, the end of school is in sight and new possibilities for my career are falling into place.  There’s much to be grateful for and appreciate!

Not Perfect

Yesterday I made amends to someone which were overdue.  It wasn’t the best amend ever made.  My vulnerable emotional state yesterday made me less than able to make the most concise amend possible.  I wished I’d done better and kept it simpler.

Part of me wants to beat me up for it.  That’s not fair of course.  The best choice for me at this point is to learn from it and remember to trust my instincts.  My instincts told me that yesterday wasn’t the best day for me to do or say anything important.  There was a little of that “out of control” feeling whirling around inside of me which is never a stable state to interact from, based on my experience.  However, the person I apologized to was very gracious and we are on good terms.  It was my best effort for yesterday, and cleared up my mistake.

So I called people I trust in the programs and talked it out afterward, and later went out with a friend and avoided any discussion of the alcoholics in our lives or any challenges.  We just talked about what is going well, what we’re looking forward to for ourselves this year and did a little window shopping.  Very pleasant way to spend the rest of the day.  And I don’t have to be perfect!

New Adventure

My internship started this week and it has been such an honor to be allowed to sit in with people who are seeking help.  I feel overwhelmed and grateful for the glimpse into their lives and the struggles and challenges they’ve faced.  Their strength and fortitude are amazing.

In 12 Step meetings I also hear stories of grace, and courage and amazing strength from other members.  They show me the way with what they share, especially when it’s new territory for me.  And yes there is always some new territory through which we find our footing and grow.  Each new life experience helps me develop my frame of reference for how to live a whole, healthy, happy and balanced life.

It’s part of the process of the adventure to keep learning in life.  That’s why we keep coming back to meetings.  It really does work to continually show us new options, new awarenesses and expand our lifescape.  We are blessed to be able to access such a rich source of knowledge, experience and possibilities through the 12 Step Programs.

Relief

Last night we completed our Ethics class.  It’s one of the most demanding parts of our grad program.  And the relief and satisfaction I’m feeling today is a pleasure to experience.

With each new portion of my journey through life there are times of peace and stability, and times of challenge and uncertainty.  It’s up to me to decide how to show up for both.  In ethics we had to work in groups as we so often do for this program.  The difference with this one was that we had one individual dealing with some real challenges in their own life, which was spilling into our group dynamics.  It wasn’t comfortable or easy at times to be in the presence of this person.  However, the 12 Step programs have taught me that I don’t have to let others affect me.

That means my choices include focusing on the solutions, setting boundaries, looking for opportunities to be of service and avoiding joining into any dysfunction that may be operating in the midst of things.  And then, we can move on.  In the situation with our project group, we made it through.  No one wishes the person who brought so much turmoil to the process any ill will.  We did our best to stay on our respective sides of the street and do the work we were responsible for doing.  Our project turned out to be a great success and we will see good grades for our efforts.  And today, we are all feeling a great sense of relief that it’s over.  So relieved!

Having Fun

It’s nice to be able to have fun on a holiday.  It’s a little easier with in-laws sometimes, especially when no one is a big drinker or drama drain.  At my in-laws yesterday that was the case.  Other than the fact that my mother-in-law doesn’t really sit down at first to eat with people (just like my own mom) our Thanksgiving celebration had a different tone than it usually does with my own family.

It was truly fun.  We ate hearty of course, talked lots and played games.  One of my brother-in-laws entertained us with numerous impressions otherwise unlike his rather sober personality, and it was actually hysterical and so good natured.  I had a wonderful time.

Speaking for myself, I am grateful for the peaceful, no drama day and the pleasure of enjoying myself.  Nothing was a big deal, and my husband and I were able to wind down at home in warmth and comfort.  Thank You Spirit for all our blessings, for our healthy family and lot’s of fun!

Practicing

My husband was a little embarassed by that last posting.  He thought I was just bragging about him and didn’t initially see that what I was focused on is my gratitude for all of his hard work and how just doing what’s in front of us to do helps us make progress.  The programs tell us this, and it’s up to us to take the action.

I’m happy to report that after the nine assignments, tests and presentations that were due last week and the three interviews, I have good news and more gratitude.  A few hours after my third interview on Saturday I was offered a practicum position!  It’s located closest to home and school, and it will have more than enough hours for me to finish my masters degree on time!  I may even be able to finish a little early.  And we have two more contracts signed to start this week and another bid to do.  Okay so obviously I’m stuck on a theme this week.  This is all the result of our Higher Powers taking care of everything while we focus on the tasks before us each day.  There were a few moments in the past week when a little fear flashed across my screen tempting me to doubt.  I think my husband had a round with it too.  But for both of us it was fleeting.  And fear didn’t stop either of us from doing what needed to be done.

There was a time where it would have been easy to grab onto that fear and ride it out to the unpleasant state of lack of serenity and insanity.  No thanks.  Not interested.  Nor does that mean that we can get cocky and arrogant about our blessings and good fortune to date.  It was only a month and a half ago that we didn’t know how we would pay the bills.  We’re making good progress, and we have more to do.  Sometimes I still feel like such a beginner.  When we are out of debt, then we will celebrate in a big way.  Meanwhile, we have small celebrations, hugs, prayers of gratitude, passing on any jobs we aren’t capable of doing to others in our network of friends and colleagues.  And we’re doing our best to carry the message and practice the principles of the program in all areas of our lives, daily.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am practicing the principles daily. ”

Halfway

I’m past the halfway mark for the semester.  It’s my last full semester of classes before practicum starts.  Seventeen credits has been a heavy schedule to say the least, and the future will be a breeze in comparison!

So, just 7 more weeks at most and the hard part is over and my new profession commences.  Although it’s only internship to start with to develop some expertise, it will contribute to my professional experience in valuable ways.  Last year at this time I was only a few weeks back into school for the first time in decades.  Now the satisfaction of being over halfway through the process is already rewarding.  I’m proud of myself for entering this new arena after years of a former career that just had no stability.

And my business plan is coming into focus as graduation draws nearer.  Everything is falling into place, thanks to my Higher Power.  We will have two thriving businesses, despite some usual growing pains, and as my husband said, “A year from now we’ll look back on how crazy busy we were and laugh at how far we’ve come.”  My thoughts are that we’ll be in great gratitude for all of the support of our Higher Power and the many people who have shown up to guide and direct us.  And despite the debt we still face, we’re remembering to pray and thank our Higher Power for all of the miracles that are manifesting daily.  We are so blessed!
