Do What You Love

I’ve been on hiatus for the last 2 1/2 months.  Going back to school  after more than a decade usurped much of my previously available energy.  To those of you who were looking for regular new installments, I’m sorry that I did not give you notice.  My goal was to continue writing while in school, but I ended up writing only for school since October.  It’s been a good opportunity to be gentler with myself – lowering those still too high standards, and accepting my humanness.  Perhaps, with some well planned time management, writing can continue to be part of my morning ritual again and I’ll catch up on my posting goal.  I’ll work on that.

Meanwhile, what is becoming more evident to me as school continues is how imperative it is that I do work that I truly love!  I mean looooooooooove!  Right now in the background the movie “Julie and Julia,” is playing.  It’s the third time for me so I’m really inspired right now.  The movie reminds me repeatedly about filling my life with the solutions – with what I love.  Yesterday, a documentary called “Between The Folds,” reminded me again when an interviewee remarked that he does origami and his other work because it’s fun.  Now this is the umpteenth time that this message is blatantly presenting itself to me this year and I can’t tell you all how well the absence of writing this blog each week has left a huge gap in my life!

Okay, message received.  Emphatically!  One of the solutions is to do what we love.  If we don’t yet know how to do that in our work, we can do it in our leisure time – for fun.  It’s sooooooo simple.  So let’s keep it that way.  List of things to do –  create, keep writing, keep cooking new dishes (I’ve been on a roll since the summer garden), plan some travel, start painting again, look for new work, start sculpting again, smile more, start planning the new garden for next summer and dance dance dance!  I love to dance!  Doesn’t that sound like a great list?  It is.  I strongly suggest that we all make a list of what we love to do and stick to it.  The next step then is to make time in our schedules, in our heads, in our budgets to do what we love.  It’s one of the solutions that makes my life happy, truly and leads me to perfect days – like last summer, and today!

Being

Friends of mine are learning how to just be in the moment – right now.  And they inspire me as they try on this new way of being, sharing with me how uncomfortable it feels at times.  And, how rewarding it is at the same time.  I can relate to the swelling that happens in our hearts when we try on a new role in our families or our friendships.  When we take care of ourselves first, there is more to give to others.  So instead of doing the safe and familiar and focusing on others, we are told to keep our eyes on ourselves.  On our business, and off other people, things and situations.  We are told the uncomfortable – they are none of our business.  Ughhhhh.

When my sponsor first shared this with me it was, in a way, a relief.  I had enough to keep my focus on with my own home, family life and my personal conduct.  I don’t always know where the healthy, helpful boundaries are and I’m aware of that so my sponsor helps me learn about it.  Although my parents did a good job with me regarding many other aspects of life, emotional and relational boundaries were a challenge for them because of their own families of origin.  Which reminds me that when we know better, we do better.

It may be a bit humbling at times to request the help needed to navigate through the situations that arise each day, but what a blessing that these are “We” programs.  Each of us has the resources of the experience, strength and hope of our sponsors and our fellow 12 Step members all focusing on improving the quality of our lives and therefore the lives of those we interact with each day.  The domino effect is a blessing for us all.  Pass it on.

Be Without Doing

water-lily

My first year in the program a friend told me that I could learn to be without doing.  I had no idea what this meant at the time.  For years I’d been running around doing, doing, doing – especially for everyone else.  It’s what made me think I had a reason for being.  It also kept me from feeling me feelings and certainly helped me avoid looking at myself.  What’s more, when I needed help there was no one there to help me.

Since then, the concept of being without doing is clearer to me.  It means to take care of myself, slow down, sit and meditate, breath, go out and lay on the lawn, get up a little earlier so I can just sit outside in the summer and watch the planet – the birds, the squirrels, the chipmunk, the lady bugs, the plants growing, the trees waving in the wind.  It means saying no comfortably, discerning when things are none of my business, crying when I’m sad, calling another member of 12 Step programs when I’m scared, making time for me.  It’s a much nicer pace of life.  There is no guilt about just being during my day in between the activities which are necessary in order for me to be responsible and accountable for myself and my well being.  It fits in quite nicely and makes me more productive when there are things to do.

It wasn’t comfortable to do this at first.  That’s pretty normal for new behaviors.  Now it comes easily and as I take better care of me, there is more of me available to be of service to God and others.  And I have the discernment, thanks to years of practice, of how much of my time can be spent in service and keep me healthy at the same time.  If ever I run into questions about it, I just call my sponsor and we walk through the pros and cons and come out on the other side with a reasonable decision.  It’s another way to ” Keep It Simple.”
