Miracles and Joy

A member of the 12 Step program is experiencing the Miracles of the program early into his recovery journey.  However, he’s having trouble seeing it.  He hasn’t made the switch to focusing on the solution as completely as he could.  One thing at a time.

Although this person has made progress, he keeps faltering with a focus on the problem.  It doesn’t have to be this way.  I was reminded in class yesterday of the Buddhist belief that, to paraphrase, “Pain is part of life, but suffering is optional.”  We in the 12 Step programs have the opportunity to learn to discern between the pain and the suffering.  And requesting a sponsor, working the 12 Steps with them, going to meetings, reading the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, and doing service work help us find and keep the Promises mentioned on p.83 of the Big Book.

Developing this skill is sooooo simple – if we’re willing.  It can be relatively easy, yet some of us make it more difficult than it needs to be. There’s a learning curve. Keeping an open mind, being willing and honest, and calling on our Higher Power for the courage to take some risks are characteristics that lead us forward into a new way of life where we can enjoy our experiences on the planet.  Suffering is optional.  Joy is plentiful – if we learn how to experience it.

Affirmation for the Day – ” I am learning about joy.”

Remember to say the affirmation at least 3 times whenever you remember it, preferably in front of a mirror.
