A friend told me once that she asks God to show her how to be a better daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, boss, employee, pet owner, member of AA, neighbor, teacher, and so on. What a great question. I added the roles - person/steward of the planet and child of God. This truly seems like a helpful request of our Higher Power.
Considering how I can be better at any of my roles in life affords me an opportunity to be clearer about being of service and about what I can contribute to, instead of take from life. In the past, my thinking obsessions had me focused only on what I wanted or how I wanted things to go for me. Sometimes it was masked as what I wanted for others, but there was often an ulterior motive in my favor.
My guide in this activity is Step 11 – “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of his will for us and the power to carry that out.” As my conscious contact with God improves, opportunities easily present themselves for me to be of service, and for growth that gives me what I need in my life rather, than what I want. While it may not always be what I would have chosen, in hind sight, it’s apparent that my Higher Power was watching out for me. I learn lessons that help me and make me a better, happier person in whatever role is at hand to be practiced.
